How to Recycle Old Appliances



There are many things you must consider when deciding to repair or replace a broken down appliances.  Some factors include the cost of appliance repair versus the cost of buying a new one, history of performance, age of the appliance and overall satisfaction. Recycling old appliances is a great option when fixing them is not economical.

Remember, there is a lot of hassle involved with replacing an appliance including taking time to shop for a new one and dealing with high-pressure salesmen; finding one that meets your needs, fits the space in your home and matches the décor; getting familiar with new features, buttons and gadgets and arranging the disconnect, disposal and new appliance installation.

On the other hand, there are some advantages to buying a new appliance including new energy saving features making them cheaper and easier to use and more efficient at getting the job done.  According to the EPA a 20-year-old refrigerator or freezer can use two to four times more energy than a newer model

Contact your local electric utility company to see if they offer an energy incentive program in your area.  Chances are they will collect and recycle your old appliance. Some utility providers may offer rebates or discounts for purchasing Energy Star rated appliances.

Contact your local department of public works and ask about the procedures for collecting and recycling appliances in your area.

See if there is a used appliance store in the area that will refurbish and resell your old appliance.  Many appliance parts can be recycled to reduce the need to produce new materials; thus reducing waste and saving precious limited resources.

Try to avoid leaving old household appliances on the curb for large trash pickup because it might not get disposed of properly.

The landfill should be the last resort for an old appliance.  Recycling is always the best option whenever possible.

Maintenance is the best way to save money by preventing breakdown and extending longevity.
